I recently posted an entry on USMT Migration using LiteTouch, which would help you quickly enable a fairly comprehensive migration in as little as a few minutes. I’m often asked what data and settings USMT actually migrates when used in it’s default configuration, well here is the answer.

USMT 4.0 features fairly flexible customisation using XML files. By default, 2 files are used to control the migration, MigApp.xml and MigUser.xml. These files contain instructions for migrating a variety of data and settings, including;

MigUser.xml

  • My Shared Videos
  • My Music
  • My Shared Music

  • Shared Desktop

  • Shared Start Menu
  • My Documents
  • My Shared Documents
  • My Pictures
  • My Shared Pictures
  • Favourites
  • Shared Favourites
  • Quick Launch
  • Files with certain extensions (MS Office files etc.)

MigApp.xml

  • Lotus Notes 6, 7 and 8
  • RealPlayer Basic 11
  • Windows Live
  • QuickTime Player (5, 6 and 7)
  • Microsoft Office 2003
  • Microsoft Office 2007
  • WinZip
  • Adobe Reader 9.0
  • Adobe Photoshop CS 9
  • Lotus SmartSuite
  • Yahoo! Messenger

  • Mozilla Firefox 3
  • Safari 4
  • Opera 9
  • Google Chrome
  • Ad-aware 6 Professional
  • Skype 3
  • Google Talk 1
  • Google Picasa 3

In addition to the data and settings above, USMT has built in definitions for migrating settings for a range of Windows components, including;

USMT Settings

  • Windows Search
  • Windows Themes
  • Tablet PC Settings
  • Printers and Faxes
  • Phone and Modem
  • Windows Mail
  • Fax
  • Internet Options
  • Networking Connections
  • Date, Time, Language and Region
  • Security
  • Appearance and Display
  • Windows Core Settings
  • Accessibility

If you aren’t looking to migrate everything I’ve listed above, or you wish to add extra data or settings, I’ll shortly post an article on customising your USMT migration.
